Can Celery Seed Extract affect Hypertension and Anxiety?

by

Clinical trial reveals that celery seed extract is beneficial for hypertension and anxiety

Anxiety and depression are significant public health concerns that can lead to increased hospitalizations and mortality rates. These mental health conditions can also exacerbate hypertension and vice versa.

Clinical Trial

A clinical trial examined the effects of celery seed extract, containing the active ingredient 3-n-butylphthalide, as a drug supplement on anxiety and secondary depression in hypertensive patients. The trial lasted for four weeks, with a 4-week washout period. Fifty hypertensive patients received a placebo or celery seed extract capsules (1.34 g per day) to supplement their medication for four weeks. Blood pressure parameters were measured using a 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure monitoring device. Anxiety and depression and their various symptoms were evaluated using the Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) and Beck Depression Inventory (BDI).

Results

During the celery treatment phase, there was a significant reduction in BAI and BDI scores. Symptoms of anxiety, such as inability to relax, nervousness, numbness, dizziness, flushed face, sweating, and breathing difficulties, significantly improved with celery consumption. Celery also demonstrated the ability to alleviate symptoms of depression, including sadness, crying, loss of energy, insomnia, irritability, fatigue, loss of interest in sex, and feelings of punishment. Additionally, celery therapy resulted in a significant reduction in blood pressure parameters.
