The Benefits of Kinesio Taping and Physical Therapy for Chronic Back Pain

by

Clinical trial shows kinesio taping plus physical therapy beneficial for back pain

Chronic back pain is a common condition that can significantly affect a person's quality of life. Various factors, including poor posture, muscle strain, injury, and degenerative changes in the spine, can cause it. Many people can struggle to manage chronic back pain, and finding effective treatment options can be challenging.

Clinical Trial

A clinical trial investigated the effectiveness of Kinesio taping (KT) in combination with conventional physical therapy (CPT) for the treatment of chronic low back pain (CLBP). The participants were randomly assigned to the experimental group (KT with CPT) and the control group (CPT only).

Kinesio Taping

Kinesio taping is a technique that involves applying a special type of tape to the skin in a specific pattern to help support muscles and joints and reduce pain. Conventional physical therapy typically involves exercises, stretches, and other interventions to improve strength, flexibility, and mobility.

The study measured several outcomes, including pain using the Numerical Pain Rating Scale, lumbar flexion range of motion (ROM) by the modified Schober's method, and functional disability using the Oswestry Disability Index. The outcomes were measured at baseline, in the second week, and in the sixth week of the intervention.

Results

The study results showed that the experimental group, who received KT with CPT, had a more significant decrease in pain than the control group after two weeks of intervention. This effect was maintained during the six-week follow-up. Additionally, the experimental group significantly improved disability at two and six weeks, and lumbar flexion ROM was significantly better at both time points. These findings suggest combining Kinesio taping with conventional physical therapy can be an effective treatment option for chronic low back pain.

Conclusion

While this study provides promising results, it is essential to note that chronic back pain can have many different causes, and what works for one person may not work for another. Additionally, the study only included male adults with CLBP, so further research is needed to determine the effectiveness of Kinesio taping in combination with conventional physical therapy for other populations, such as women or older adults.
