Want to Live Longer? Get your Protein from Plants instead of Animals

A new study lead by researcher Jiaqi Huang, a postdoctoral fellow at the US National Cancer Institute, analyzed dietary data from 237,000 men and 179,000 women between 1995 and 2011.
The results? If you want to reduce your risk of early death, get your protein from plants.
Substitute tofu for eggs and your risk is 24% lower for men and 21% lower for women.
Ditch your red meat for beans and men have 13% lower risk and women have 15%.
Plant protein is loaded with fiber, antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals. What is meat protein loaded with? Cholesterol, sodium, and higher levels of saturated fats, all of which increase cardiovascular disease mortality.
Also of concern are the amino acids formed from the breakdown of animal protein that can cause hardening of the arteries or inflammation. Or its negative effect on gut bacteria.
The 16-year study concluded that for every 10 grams of plant-for-animal protein swapping per 1,000 calories, a 12% lower risk of death resulted in men and a 14% lower risk in women.
