A mutated strain of the coronavirus dubbed D614G has been identified and could prove to be worse than the original COVID-19 found in the early coronavirus outbreak. The new strain appears to more contagious and dominant than the novel, leaving individuals susceptible to a second infection. Originally discovered in Europe, the disease has quickly moved to the East Coast of the United States and could prove to be bad news.
A recent report released by
BioRxiv identifies the mutation affects the spikes on the exterior of the virus, allowing it to enter human respiratory cells. Reports state the new strain of coronavirus infected far more people that the strain that originated from Wuhan, China.
Along with the striking news this strain is found to be far more infectious, researchers have found within weeks the newly mutated strain of coronavirus was the only strain that was dominant in some nations.
During the past two decades, we have seen three major outbreaks of coronavirus. Those being Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (SARS-CoV), Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS-CoV), and now COVID-19. COVID-19 seems to be the worst of the three and just keeps getting worse.
